Vaishno Devi draws pilgrims from across India, and while the shrine itself sits atop a trek from Katra, everything leading up to that point — the drive to Katra, accommodation, and trek logistics — is where good planning makes the biggest difference to how the trip actually feels.
Most pilgrims fly or drive into Jammu, then travel by road to Katra, the base town for the yatra, roughly 45-50 km and about 1.5-2 hours by road. From Katra, the shrine itself is reached via a roughly 12-13 km trek (or shorter routes via helicopter or battery-operated vehicles for parts of the way).
The traditional trek path on foot, pony or palanquin services for those unable to walk the full distance, and helicopter services from Katra to Sanjichhat (reducing the walking trek significantly) for pilgrims wanting a faster or less physically demanding option. We can help arrange whichever option suits your group’s needs and advance booking for helicopter slots where relevant, since these fill up quickly during peak season.
Most pilgrims complete the yatra in 1-2 days from Katra, though we’d suggest building in a rest day either before or after the trek, particularly for elderly travelers or larger family groups, rather than treating it as a single rushed day.
The yatra is open year-round, though March to July and September to November tend to be most popular, avoiding both peak monsoon (landslide risk on the trek path) and the coldest winter months when the trek can be genuinely difficult.
A Yatra Registration Slip is required and can be obtained online in advance or at counters in Katra — we guide travelers through this process as part of booking, since it’s mandatory before starting the trek.
