The Char Dham Yatra is genuinely one of the more demanding pilgrimages we help plan — four sacred sites across Uttarakhand’s high mountains, significant trekking at some stops, and a schedule that needs real buffer time built in for weather and altitude. This isn’t a trip to under-plan.
Sacred Char Dham Circuit
Yamunotri
The source of the Yamuna River, reached via a trek from Janki Chatti.
Gangotri
The origin point of the Ganga, more accessible by road with a shorter walk to the temple.
Kedarnath
Dedicated to Shiva, requiring a roughly 16-18 km trek (or helicopter option) from Gaurikund.
Badrinath
Dedicated to Vishnu, the most road-accessible of the four.
Traditional Route Order
Most pilgrims follow the sequence Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath, though the order can be adjusted based on your starting point and time available. We’ll plan the most sensible route given your specific dates and starting location.
Suggested Duration
A complete Char Dham Yatra covering all four sites typically takes 10-12 days including travel and trek time, given the distances between sites and the physical demands of both Yamunotri and Kedarnath’s treks. Shorter partial itineraries (Do Dham or a single site) are possible if time is limited.
Trek & Transport Options
Kedarnath and Yamunotri both involve significant trekking, with pony, palanquin, and (for Kedarnath) helicopter options available for those unable to complete the walk. We help arrange these, with helicopter slots in particular needing advance booking given high demand during peak season.
Best Time to Visit
The Char Dham temples open in late April or early May and close by early November due to winter snow — travel outside this window isn’t possible since the shrines themselves are inaccessible. Peak pilgrimage season (May-June and September-October) sees the highest crowds; monsoon months (July-August) bring landslide risk on mountain roads.
Health & Altitude
Kedarnath in particular sits at high altitude with a demanding trek, and we’d encourage honest self-assessment of fitness before committing to the full circuit — we can suggest helicopter alternatives for stops where the trek may be too physically demanding, particularly for elderly pilgrims.
Registration Requirements
Char Dham Yatra requires biometric registration, which we assist with as part of your booking — this is mandatory and has become stricter in recent years, so it’s not something to leave until the last minute.
